	ZSOLNAY EXHIBIT/ZSOLNAY ART POTTERY, THE GYUGYI COLLECTION Cultural Exchange Foundation organized the Zsolnay exhibition at the Forbes Gallery in New York in January, 2009. The exhibition featured 167 Art Nouveau ceramic pieces from the Laszlo Gyugyi collection, one of the largest and finest collections of Zsolnay in the world. The exhibition coincided with the yearlong celebration of Hungarian culture, organized by the Hungarian Cultural Center and the Hungarian Ministry of Culture. Zsolnay was founded in 1853 in the southern Hungarian city of Pécs and still operates as a family-run company. Hungarian-born American scientist Dr. Laszlo Gyugyi has spent the past 35 years amassing over 600 pieces of Zsolnay. This magnificent collection spans Zsolnay’s heyday, from the 1870s to the 1920s and represents every major artist, style, form, and glaze technique. Many of his pieces are unique prototypes that were produced for display at world’s fairs and awarded top prizes at various world exhibitions in Europe and America.

The Zsolnay ceramics reputation peaked during the Art Nouveau period. Its sinuous designs and innovative glaze formulas laced with minerals won international recognition. The quality of these works is on par with other masterpieces of the era from such artists as Louis Comfort Tiffany and Clément Massier. Although Zsolnay produced many fine pieces later in the Art Nouveau period, those made for the 1900 Exposition in Paris and up to around 1905 are true masterpieces of the Zsolnay workshop. On display will be over 250 exquisite, often one-of-a-kind works chosen from Dr. Gyugyi’s collection. He has commissioned extensive studies of his collection based on new research from the world’s leading Zsolnay scholars: Eva Csenkey, chief ceramics curator at the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest, and Dr. Eva Hars, former director of the Zsolnay Museum in Pécs.
