ZOLTÁN KODÁLY

Born in 1882, Zoltán Kodály was a Hungarian composer, educator, linguist and philosopher. The Washington Post wrote, “The music of Zoltán Kodály, fluent and persuasive, is never far removed from the vibrant, earthy Magyar folk styles of his native Hungary. Yet his works also reach for an impressionistic shimmer and shadow. Both of these influences were heard Thursday in a rewarding evening of Kodály’s music at the Corcoran Museum in Washington, DC. Kodály’s interest in music education led him to compose many choral works for children. The Columbus Children’s Choir of Ohio charmingly sang a set of light folk pieces, including one by Bartok, Kodály’s contemporary and colleague.”

Cultural Exchange Foundation organized and presented this performance, along with a concert featuring pianists Marta Erdei and a performance by Laszlo Szvetek, a bass with the State Opera of Budapest. Following the concert, children and adults participated in a program of musical fun (songs, dance and singing games) and musical education.
